Ferragosto, But Why So Many Processions?
· by Carolina
When we talk about Ferragosto, we can't ignore the Assumption of Mary. But why has it become such an important celebration, filled with processions and rituals? The story begins in antiquity, with the Feast of the Assumption being celebrated as early as the 5th century, particularly in Eastern traditions. In Rome, its significance grew notably from the mid-7th century, thanks to Pope Sergius I, who helped formalize it in the Western liturgical calendar. This feast quickly spread from Jerusalem and other Eastern churches, becoming a solemn time to commemorate Mary's death and her assumption into heaven, body and soul. Finally, the culmination of this millennial story arrived on November 1, 1950, when Pope Pius XII proclaimed the dogma of the Assumption of Mary, making official a faith and a tradition that already had very deep roots. This is why, in so many places, August 15th is a day not only of rest but also of faith and deep processions that unite the community. Allora, buon Ferragosto e buona processione a tutti!
