‘Figurati!’: More Than Just “Don’t Mention It”
My husband has recently become quite charmed by the Italian expression ‘Figurati!’ It’s what we say when someone thanks us with a ‘Grazie’ or ‘Grazie mille,’ and in English, it’s roughly equivalent to ‘Don’t mention it.’
While its common usage is straightforward, the origin of ‘Figurati’ adds a layer of understanding that helps you use it more intuitively. The verb ‘figurarsi’ means “to imagine” or “to picture something figuratively.” So, when we say ‘Figurati’ after being thanked, we’re essentially implying, “you can imagine, it was nothing of consequence.”
What is the formal version? For formal situations, or when speaking to someone you don’t know well, the appropriate version is ‘Si figuri!’
Allora (so), andiamo! Embrace the ‘Figurati!’, and sound effortlessly Italian while subtly implying that whatever you did was just a walk in the park. You’re welcome. (Or should I say, Figurati!)
